Dahlias
This year we will be growing 50+ varieties of dahlias - all grown from our own certified-organic tubers that we have saved to expand our collection over the past handful of years. View the gallery below to see some what diverse varieties we will be growing this year. All of the pictures are from our dahlia gardens last summer. Dahlias require some maintenance to be successful, but the rewards for their stunning, unique blooms in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and varieties are well worth the efforts. We grow everything from ball form, dinnerplate (huge 8” - 13” blooms), collarette, decorative, anemone, and waterlily varieties.
Dahlias can come at a higher upfront cost, making them an investment for any garden. The beauty of these plants is that, after planting a single tuber, they spend the season growing additional tubers that can be dug up and separated at the end of the season. Investing in one tuber can double, triple, or even leave you with 10 new tubers to plant out the following year depending on how prolific the tuber system is.

Every fall, we dig up our tuber clumps and separate them to store overwinter. It can be a nerve-wracking ordeal opening the boxes in the spring and hoping that the tubers have lasted throughout the months in storage. This year, we were able to separate and collect enough tubers to begin sharing our collection with you! You can view what tubers we have to offer HERE. We plan to launch the tuber sale early March and then ship out in April once the weather warms up. Some variety quantities are very limited, so if you see one you like, snag it while you can!
Some of our favorite blooms include Hollyhill Pink Martini, Rip City, Bloomquist Sweet, Belle of Barmera, Bloomquist Ginnie, and the coveted “unicorn” variety “Kelgai Ann”, a delicate waterlily variety. Dahlias will be a focal flower in our Floral Abundance Flower CSA, where you will receive weekly hand-arranged bouquets full of these beauties for 10 weeks straight during the peak of our growing season. The best time to visit our gardens and see these dahlias in full bloom would be August through September. For custom arrangements, dahlias will likely still be available from end of July through beginning of October unless there is an early frost. Tours are available via appointment. We hope you enjoy exploring the wonders of dahlias as much as we do!
