Lisianthus

Lisianthus are a heat-loving specialty cut-flower native to the Southern United States and Central Americas. They have a romantic, almost rose-like bloom with long vase lives. Although lisianthus typically couldn’t be grown successfully in Maine’s 6A climate zone, our greenhouse called “Eric’s Hoophouse” is able to maintain warm enough temperatures throughout the summer to help these beauties bloom.

Even with the proper equipment, Lisianthus can be very difficult to grow from seed. We are able to support other growers like Farmer Bailey by sourcing the lisianthus as plugs and planting the sprouts in our greenhouses once fear of frost has past. We are growing over 1200 lisianthus this year in 6 varieties: Voyage Blue, Voyage Light Apricot, Rosanne Brown, Rosanne Terracotta, Sabrina Orange, and Sabrina Mango.

Lisianthus can also look very different depending on how full they are blooming. We imagine this to be a flower plucked straight from a fairytale, with its almost glittering quality and antique purple ruffles.

This year we will be growing a highly anticipated, newly released variety of Lisianthus called “Rosanne Brown”. Blooms should start appearing end of July into August and continue up until the frost comes. If you’d like to tour the farm during peak Lisianthus seaon, set up an appointment throughout those weeks. July through September will also be the time to order lisianthus-focused custom arrangements. We are also offering our “Floral Abundance Flower CSA” starting July 24th. The lisianthus will be focal flowers in many of the bouquets during the 10-week share that finished out our cut-flower season.
