Perennials

Roses, Herbal/Pollinator Plants, Fillers, & More

Perennials, as a classification of plant, are plants that come back year after year without being re-planted. Many of these plants are native flora that tend to overrun the garden as Mother Nature’s gift to us! Wild flower freebies, if you will. These include Bee Balm (Bergamot), Anise Hyssop, Rudbeckia, Daisies, Queen Anne’s Lace, Clover and Button Flowers, and more! These plants will self-seed in the fall and come back the following year with little maintenance. Others, like the roses, are special heirloom varieties we have acquired and planted under the Flower Shop arbors. Our pollinator sanctuary would be incomplete without the addition of these flowers. Many serve as the backdrop for our hand-arranged bouquets to foil the other focal flowers, or as the bases to our organically-made herbal teas and other hand-made products.

A Summery, Perennial Arrangement that we did for a USM Pinning Ceremony

Every part of Anise Hyssop - an aromatic herbal plant with purple flowers and a licorice-mint profile - can be used. The flowers are edible, and the leaves can be used to make simple syrup, tea, or dried and ground to be used as an anise/licorice alternative in baking recipes.

These are just a handful of the heirloom roses we have around the property. Many of these varieties are under our rose arbors in front of the Flower Shop. Over the winter, we built three new raised beds in front of the large grape vineyard that will contain more roses and Saffron Crocuses. Our roses usually have their first bloom during June and then a second burst of blooms in September.

If you want to start your own pollinator-friendly garden with self-seeding perennials we have a limited offering of Anise Hyssop, Bee Balm, and Rudbeckia seeds collected from our organically-grown plants last fall. They can be found HERE

Perennials make a big appearance in our “Summer Aromatics” Flower CSA, which starts June 26th. This 4-week share will contain foxgloves, rudbeckias, hydrangeas, roses, daisies, zinnias, and much more. These bouquets will also feature more of our aromatic blooms - such as anise hyssop and bergamot - to bring the smells of the summer sunshine into your home. Think vibrant summer colors of pinks, reds, oranges, and blues. Custom arrangements featuring perennials will likely be available all growing season long from May through October as we grow a variety of flowers throughout the season.
