What’s the word? Bird!

We have tons of beautiful hens, chicks, and roosters on the farm. All of them are of rare breeds, but even more precious to us because of their amazing personalities! In case you haven’t heard just yet, we are a no-kill farm. This means all of our birds live their entire lives on the farm, even if they don’t lay eggs anymore. We don’t believe in hurting animals once they stop laying eggs, they will always be apart of our family.

Today, I would like to show you some of our birds and give a little history about them.

Colonel Sanders

Here, we have a photo of one of our roosters, Colonel Sanders.
He is a White Maran rooster. White Marans are a more rare breed of the Marans, but still carry the dark chocolate eggshell gene.
Absolutely gorgeous with his white and cream feathers and bright red comb to match.
He is one of our older roosters and he is an absolute sweetheart. Loves to run outside, especially when we are trying to get them to bed for the night! He loves to protect his flock, hang out with the farmhands during breaks, and loves to sunbathe on the back porch.

Suzie Q

This beautiful hen right here is Suzie Q. She is a Polish Hen. One of the most incredible thing about these birds is their giant hair-do and their love to party! Fun fact, in 1736, the King of Poland was unseated and fled to France. With him in his ‘luggage’ he brought his adored Polish hens.

The first account of them comes from the Netherlands where they were most likely imported from Spain. There are plenty of paintings of the breed from the fifteenth century where it seems to be part of everyday life. In the sixteenth century, they were declared a thoroughbred by the Dutch. The Polish hen then traveled from Europe to England (1700’s) eventually finding its way to the USA in 1830-1840.

With that history, they found their way to Scarborough, Maine!

Suzie Q is our oldest hen even though she has kept her very youthful appearance. Back in the day, she loved to hide, run, play, and party! These days, she loves to sunbathe and sometimes hide around the farm to cause a little trouble!

Perry the Platypus

This gorgeous girl right here is one of our younger birds. She was born May 2020 with her three other siblings. We breed our own birds and Zebra (her father) just happened to get mixed up with Aaiden’s flock! So, we have a Polish and Black Maran mix!
One of our farmhands hand-raised the birds throughout the summer. Through hand raising, they are the sweetest birds! Perry and her sister Cecelia, specifically, love to be held and love to perch on anyone’s arm.
As of right now, it looks like the eggs they lay are a beautiful baby blue and pastel green.

Zebra

This is a photo of another of our roosters, Zebra!
He is a Polish rooster, and Perry’s father!
Zebra is an older man with a crazy hair-do and he loves to jump! Zebra has a very specific crow that can be heard no matter where you are on the farm.
He is a crazy old man with a crazy hair-do and a crazy love for partying!
